Dr. Schnarch is a sex therapist and a psychologist who has written a number of books about passionate marriage. In this book, he provides an excellent description of emotional differentiation (the ability to retain a sense of self while being in a relationship) and how difficulties in this area result in “emotional gridlock.” One of the best qualities of the book is how clearly he is able to describe the behavioral and emotional dynamics in a relationship through the lens of intimacy. His use of case studies provides an excellent vehicle for clearly describing a number of these issues, from both person’s perspectives, as well as how improvements are actually made (rather than a theoretical description). His style of writing is clear and insightful, yet he makes it possible for the reader to follow each of his interpretations and interventions.
