Rashomon

The movie is based upon a fairly simple but not easy question:  who killed the man whose body was found in the forest?  Witnesses are interviewed and their stories differ a great deal, making it difficult to come to a clear conclusion about what happened.  The viewer is led into a number of unanswered questions, such as about whether the differences in the stories are deliberate, accidental/incidental, and/or subconscious.  We are left with a question for which there could only be one answer, yet there are several answers that beg the question of what is the truth.  What actually happened becomes less interesting than what the witnesses think happened and why.
